Composition 101

With Pei Ketron

Teaching composition is almost like trying to teach someone to see. It’s nearly impossible. You can learn tips, tricks, and rules, but the vision must be yours. It comes from your own experiences and preferences, and from the people, places, and stories around you.

In this class, you’ll get some pointers and guidelines, as well as gain ideas for inspiration. You'll learn the origins of these guidelines and the importance of standing behind what you create. You’ll walk away equipped with the vocabulary you need to talk about your own and others’ photography.

  • You will learn how to look at and talk about photography as an art form, some popular rules of photography (as well as how and when to break them!), and the importance of shooting intentionally.

  • Hands-on work will include time to shoot using the new compositional tips and tricks we cover during the lecture, as well as a chance to ask questions and get immediate feedback on the process of composing as you’re actively shooting

  • Bring to class two photos you've taken; one that you love and one that you feel is missing something.
