Teaching composition is almost like trying to teach someone to see. It’s nearly impossible. You can learn tips, tricks, and rules, but the vision must be yours. It comes from your own experiences and preferences, and from the people, places, and stories around you.
In this class, you’ll get some pointers and guidelines, as well as gain ideas for inspiration. You'll learn the origins of these guidelines and the importance of standing behind what you create. You’ll walk away equipped with the vocabulary you need to talk about your own and others’ photography.
You will learn how to look at and talk about photography as an art form, some popular rules of photography (as well as how and when to break them!), and the importance of shooting intentionally.
Hands-on work will include time to shoot using the new compositional tips and tricks we cover during the lecture, as well as a chance to ask questions and get immediate feedback on the process of composing as you’re actively shooting
Bring to class two photos you've taken; one that you love and one that you feel is missing something.

Pei Ketron is a photographer, educator, and traveler based in San Francisco. She specializes in commercial, travel, and humanitarian work worldwide. In addition to her experience with DSLR and medium-format film photography, Pei is also an accomplished mobile photographer and has amassed a following of nearly a million users on Instagram. She also teaches photography workshops and private lessons.
Prior to embarking on a career in photography, Pei spent a decade as an elementary school special education teacher. She was born in Taiwan and raised on the Navajo Nation in Arizona as part of a biracial household. As a child, she spent summers enduring the monsoons of the tropics and the remainder of the year running barefoot in the deserts of the American Southwest.
