Learning to use your flash off camera gives you the ability to create beautiful light anywhere. Whether you like dramatic light or subtle light that mimics the look of natural light, your off-camera flash can help you fill a room with light, photograph your subjects after dark, or even overpower the sun. That beautiful sunset behind your subject? You no longer have to choose whether to preserve your sky or blow it out and properly expose the subject—with off-camera flash you can choose a beautiful exposure for both! We'll cover basic techniques, advanced techniques, equipment selection, and quick set-up and takedown. Through a series of creative light assignments you'll learn how to create light quickly and confidently in any situation. No prior flash experience is necessary.
You will learn Michelle's three step process for creating beautiful light easily, how to position your light in order to create beautiful light that can range from subtle to dramatic, and how to choose your equipment to keep your kit easy to carry.
Hands-on work will include camera and light configuration set-up and shooting in the field. At the end of the class we'll evaluate the in-camera choices that we made while shooting.
Bring to class your camera, a flash, and a compatible trigger/receiver. While you can learn the basics with those three things, you'll find that you'll be happier with your light if you also have a light stand, umbrella bracket, and umbrella. However, if you just want to learn how off-camera flash works and you don't have a lot of equipment, you can certainly get through the class with the camera, flash, and trigger/receiver set.
