On-Camera Flash: More Beautiful Than You Imagined

With Michelle Turner

Do you have a flash that has been sitting unused in your bag since you bought it?  Or maybe you use your flash grudgingly, but find yourself hating the results?  This course will teach you how to get natural results from your on-camera speedlight.  We'll discuss TTL, manual flash, how to bounce and diffuse, and creative strategies for working quickly in the field.

  • You will learn how to take control of your on-camera speedlight indoors and using bounce and diffusion techniques to create beautiful images that look anything but "flashed."

  • Hands-on work will include reviewing images for the exposure triangle and histograms. Then we'll get out and practice shooting in the field. At the end of the class we'll evaluate the in-camera choices that we made while shooting.

  • Bring to class your camera, an on-camera speedlight that is compatible with your camera, and a reflector (if you have one). You need a flash that can rotate and tilt. (Most on camera flashes can rotate and tilt, but some of the small, less expensive flashes can only tilt up and down and are unable to rotate/swivel—to get the most out of this class you'll want a flash that can rotate/swivel as well.)

Michelle's photography is a wildly fun, all-or-nothing, bold, brazen, adventure-laden experience, akin to a magazine shoot. From Puerto Vallarta to Maine, Pennsylvania to the world at large, the places she shoots shape her photography as much as the people she photographs. In 2015, Michelle was named one of the top 100 wedding photographers in the U.S.
Michelle has published two books about fashionable wedding photography and speaks at numerous conventions and events throughout the year on light, flash photography, posing, and composition. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Harper’s Bazaar, Rangefinder, and Brides Magazine.
She currently resides in Southern California, although her photography assignments take her all over the world and she spends a significant part of each winter in Mexico, Central America, and Europe.
